Insideout Design, a specialized interior design company, draws inspiration from diverse cultures around the world. Founded by a Senior Purser for KLM, the company leverages unique experiences and travel opportunities to create truly distinctive designs for its clients.
The decision to become an entrepreneur was not initially part of the founder's plan. The passion for designing beautiful homes led to a surge in requests for interior design services. With the help of a friend, the business was established in 2007, and it continues to thrive to this day.
The challenges encountered while setting up the business were numerous. As an entrepreneur, one must handle all aspects of the business, which can be overwhelming. Recognizing this, the founder sought guidance from knowledgeable individuals who provided essential business support. Although not naturally inclined towards business management, the founder took courses, including those offered by the Chamber of Commerce, to acquire the necessary entrepreneurial skills. Continuous learning remains a priority to keep up with the ever-evolving business landscape.
Facing setbacks is an inevitable part of entrepreneurship. In 2008, during the economic crisis, the business faced stagnation with no new inquiries or income. However, the founder saw this as an opportunity to further education. Pursuing studies at Artemis, a school for styling and design, proved beneficial, enhancing skills and expanding the client base. Additionally, graphic design knowledge gained during this period allowed the business to offer photorealistic renderings. As the saying goes, "every disadvantage has its advantage."
Determining which ideas are worth pursuing comes with experience. With years of industry expertise, the founder can assess the feasibility of ideas. In cases of uncertainty, collaboration with contractors and construction supervisors helps ensure practicality. Traveling to different countries provides new ideas, but it can be challenging to convince local builders of their viability.
Competition in the industry is viewed as an opportunity rather than a threat. Each designer has their unique niche and inspiration, born out of their passion. The founder believes that collaboration and discussion among colleagues can strengthen the industry as a whole. Networking with fellow designers is a valuable experience for self-employed individuals.
The best advice received as an entrepreneur is to take action and simply begin. Embracing the fear and learning from mistakes is key to growth.
Reflecting on the journey, the founder of Insideout Design wouldn't change much if given the chance to start again. Satisfaction comes from the valuable lessons learned along the way. While the desire to start a bed and breakfast in Spain occasionally arises, interior design remains the primary focus.
Looking ahead, the founder's future plans involve transitioning to full-time dedication to the business after retiring from KLM in a year's time. This exciting prospect will allow for even greater commitment to interior design projects.
For those aspiring to start their own businesses, the advice is to persevere and not be discouraged by setbacks. Better times will come, so never give up.
